I'm glad you figured out what you want, but I feel like this time in France helped you a lot with that as well ;-) It probably sounds shit, but I figure going through hardships of life made me be more considerate of other people. If anything, now you're aware of yourself, have the strenght to not to give in every stupid beauty standard (unless you want to, of course ;-)) and living in the position of second-class citizen made you aware of all the social bullshit going on. It probably sucked, but that only means it's gonna get better now, right?
Just remember you're not doing anything to prove yourself to other people (again, standards?), you are always living your life for you. And if something makes you miserable, the best thing is to quit.
