I am so upset that I'm not sure how I'm going to say what I need to say. I know it's a weird thing to be upset about and I may seem like I'm overreacting, but I've dealt with despicable people like Ivy Higa in my personal life and I know firsthand what kind of damage they can do to someone who intimidates them.
Ivy Higa, you are a disgusting human being. Your sense of self-righteousness and your ego are so overdeveloped that they seem to have crowded out your actual humanity.
The fault doesn't entirely rest with Ivy Higa, of course. Lifetime is to blame for extending Project Runway thirty extra minutes and filling the new space with cattiness and drama. If it wasn't for Tim Gunn and my love of sewing I would have given up on the show this season, and that's a terrible thing for me to have to say.
For people who aren't watching this season's Project Runway, basically there's this harmless, funny, sweet guy named Michael C. Michael C makes dresses and stuff that aren't necessarily cutting-edge or exceedingly creative, but are beautifully and almost always perfectly constructed. I decided early on that Michael C was the funniest and most likeable person on the show this year.
There's also a demonic little busybody named Ivy Higa. I'm using her full name as many times as I can in the hopes that she will google herself one day (and I'm sure she does it often) and find this entry, because her behaviour just upset me so much that I had to pause the show while I cried. That's right, I cried at Project Runway, and not in the fun way I cried when Seth Aaron won last year. I cried because I was actually upset and felt hopeless on behalf of a person ON A TELEVISION SHOW.
Ivy Higa must have been threatened by Michael C, because she started a rumour that he was terrible at sewing. When that didn't get him eliminated (as a viewer, I have only seen excellently-made pieces by him--in fact, he's won twice whereas Ivy Higa never won) she even went so far as to spread the rumour that he was talking bad about her designs. He wasn't. There were cameras on him the whole time. He never said a negative word about anyone during that stretch of time.
Ivy Higa's own dresses were terrible every week. She kept telling people what a good seamstress she was, and for some unfathomable reason everyone else on the show seemed to agree with her. Everyone turned on Michael C. The poor man was reduced to tears in every episode because he felt so judged and alone. I know he won't win because he isn't the most creative on the show, but I would love for him to win so that he could rub it in everyone else's smug faces.
One by one people started spending time with Michael C (unwillingly) and began to realise he was actually a sweet, delightful, harmless man. No one ever pointed out that Ivy Higa was the one who had started all the cruel rumours except (God bless her) Heidi Klum. Heidi seems to be the only other person on the show who takes Michael's side, and every time she does I want to hug her and her gorgeous new haircut.
Finally, Ivy Higa's terrible work got her eliminated. Like every other week, she stood before the judges and treated them like they were idiots for not appreciating her shoddy clothes, and finally she went home for it. She went home because she sucked. She sucked at designing and she sucked at sewing and, most importantly to me as a viewer, she sucked as a person.
Michael C was gracious and polite when she left, and as soon as she was gone everyone started talking about how they had misjudged Michael and they were sorry and they were glad he was around.
Well, guess what. This week? Ivy Higa, the most loathsome human I have ever seen on television, has returned.
Within one scene she had accused Michael of cheating to his face while other designers giggled in the background and applauded her "balls." He didn't cheat! Then she told him again that he couldn't sew. Poor Michael wasn't smart enough to just ignore her, and he rose to the bait, engaging in an embarrassing and tedious squabble.
My second-least favourite contestant, Gretchen, actually won my heart for a brief moment by noting that Ivy Higa had brought a foul amount of drama when she returned, but no one stood up for Michael. None of the people who loved him last week would say a word in his defence. Gretchen did manage to go over and tell him to stay strong, and for half of an episode I appreciated her for that. Then she pulled out her own catty ego in front of the judges and I went back to wishing she'd just be voted off already.
Then Ivy Higa went around to all the other designers, bragging about the cruel things she had said to Michael C. "I just took one for the team." "I just called Michael C out to his face." Nasty things like that. When Michael left to fetch something, she quickly said "Satan has left the room." She complained over and over about Michael in the interview portion, saying that he was dramatic and vile and talked bad about people and sabotaged others. Ivy Higa, are you looking in a mirror and mistaking your reflection for Michael C? He isn't the one doing these things, you hateful, hideous monster.
Okay. I'm going to watch the rest of the episode now. I think the reason I'm reacting so strongly is because I HAVE STOOD EXACTLY WHERE MICHAEL C IS STANDING. I know what it's like and I just want to swoop in and hug him and show him my support. I really hope he doesn't get eliminated this week.

HA YES! Right when I unpaused the episode Ivy Higa was saying how she knew the world would give Michael C what he deserves. This was immediately followed by something on her sewing machine breaking and hitting her in the eye. While she shouted and complained and flapped her hands around, Michael C chuckled gleefully to himself in the corner.
At least I know the show's editors are on my side.

Buh okay. She's gone, and poor Michael C is the most compassionate person on the show. I'm calming down now.

Date: 2010-10-09 05:57 am (UTC)I have a designer friend who was virtually stalked by one of the past contestants on Project Runway. She'd turned down the opportunity to go on it herself, and has never regretted doing so.
Classic bully behaviour - isolating someone, whisper campaigns...
