I still have a thousand more words to do tonight but I DON'T WANT TO.

I saw Madagascar 2 today.  It was adorable.  Almost as wonderful as the first one.

The Merlin CIN thing was REALLY AMAZING.  The dl description was "Camelot is attacked by a one-eyed bear; Merlin gets pelted by vegetables and felt up by Arthur... again."  Hilarious.  I think I'm going to need a Merlin tag before too long.

(No progress bar because I'll presumably type another 1000 words before I go to sleep.  I've done nearly eight hundred thus far.  Yeesh.)

ETA: Screw it.  I still need about eight hundred more, but I'm just burnt out.  I have work tomorrow.  As long as there's not a massive matinee crowd for James Bond I should be able to get plenty done.  And anyway, I want to watch Firefly.  Because the characters are all cliche thus I'm only really interested in the shepherd, but somehow I can't stop watching.  Is it brilliant or is it terrible?  I just don't know.  And anyway, if I thought "I think you may have a problem with your brain being missing" was funny, that was before I saw "Dear Diary... today I was pompous and my sister was crazy.  Today, we were kidnapped by hill folk never to be seen again. It was the best day ever."  Also, unexpected!Zac Efron for the WTF!

ETA again: Jaynestown!  Shepherd!  Hair!  Kaylee!  Simon!  Yay.

You're watching Merlin? AHAHAHAHAHA.

(Characters are all cliche? Really?)

Listen, lady, just because Merlin isn't well-written and apparently has nothing to do with canon doesn't mean I can't enjoy Colin Morgan and his UST with Bradley James. Anyway... weren't you watching Robin Hood a while back? ;)

As to the cliche thing, I think I mean more like... well... maybe I do mean cliche. I dunno. I mean, up until Jaynestown I wasn't even sure most of them could act (I'm still not sure about Inara). But we've got a hooker with a heart of gold and an unrequited crush on Captain Jack Harness Mal. They're my biggest problem. As for the rest, they're more... maybe even flat than cliche. I don't actually dislike them, I just... don't really find them interesting. Though I do think Kaylee/Simon is adorable. Like, Wash is funny when he manages to deliver one of his token snarky lines without sounding like he's reading it off a cue card, but his relationship to Zoe(?) seems almost forced most of the time. I did begin to appreciate it and him a little more in the scene where the whore/thief is trying to seduce him. And Kaylee's perkiness is cute, but the fact that she comes off as "the happy girl" makes her almost dull. She's getting a little more interesting as her relationship with Simon develops, admittedly, but my first impression of her was to be rather bored. Again, up until Jaynestown, I thought Jayne was the absolute worst character on board. The "tension" in the scene with the gun called Vera, though funny at the end, was initially really confusing and almost unmotivated. I mean, I know a lot of people on the internet worship Joss Whedon, but this is my first exposure to him (not including Doctor Horrible, which I didn't really care for) and every line just seems like it looks really great and funny on paper, but the delivery of the actors rarely sells it.

I... don't know if any of that makes sense...

(UST you say? Hmm. And it's totally different! Because Robin Hood has . . . Anjali Jay, and . . . Harry Lloyd, and . . . I'm sure there's an argument for quality somewhere)

No, it makes sense. I like some characters more than others (Inara bores me, Jayne . . . meh, Kaylee gets progressively more annoying, and Mal's fairly stereotypical) but I guess what drew me in is the sense of family they have, and how you can tell they all care for each other in different ways. Although I never cared for Mal/Inara; between being mutually indifferent to the characters and not seeing any chemistry, I just never got invested in them. Some of the actors are better than others, too.

What about River? She's a fairly polarizing character in fandom, but you haven't mentioned what you think of her.

I dunno, I haven't really formed an opinion on River. I definitely don't dislike her. In fact, I worried about her during that one episode... where they almost set fire to her... and her rearranging the Bible and fearing the shepherd's hair was very endearing. I don't know how I feel about the psychic thing and the random Cockney moment, but I'm assuming we'll learn more as we progress?

I'm really fond of most of the characters despite their being flat/cliche/uninteresting/weird at delivering lines. The captain is probably my least favourite, but I'm still a bit worried whenever he's in peril. You're definitely right about the feeling of family; I think that's probably the main reason I'm still watching. That and it's COWBOYS in SPACE.
